I'd recently seen all the announcements for ChatGPT, a tool that uses an unusually large AI training set to produce a very human-like back-and-forth conversation. While this general concept isn't new, ChatGPT is producing results that are making people notice. I wondered, then, if it might be of use for some of the typical things that happen in auto sales. Like, for example:
The comparison of two different vehicles is one that can be pretty time consuming, so I thought I'd try that with their preview tool at https://chat.openai.com. I gave the tool this prompt: Compare the features of a 2012 Toyota Camry with a 2011 Subaru Legacy And it produced this output: 2012 Toyota Camry: I double-checked that for accuracy, and it seems mostly correct, though it could be misleading. As an example, it mentions traction control for the Camry, but not for the Legacy. Maybe because the Legacy calls it "Electronic brakeforce distribution". Nonetheless, it's obviously useful as a starting point, and can save a lot of time in getting a draft response back to a customer. Just recently, OpenAI also provided some hints as to what the service might cost. I was using a developer preview account that's free, but limited, unavailable at peak times, and not meant for commercial use. Their "ChatGPTPlus" service is priced at $20/month, and includes:
I'll wrap it up with one other example, a thank you note to a customer. Here's the prompt given: Write a thank you note to a customer that bought a 2014 Ford F-150 from "Fred Jones Ford Lincoln" And the output: Dear [Customer Name], It's not 100% usable as-is, because nobody wants an impersonal robotic thank you. So you would need to customize the message. And you'll want to include other information like contact info for the service department. But it does provide a polite boilerplate to start from that's certainly easier than starting from a blank page.
Overall it feels like the product is worth considering, so long as you take the time to vet and personalize the generated content.
